From International Exchange to Local Practice

Dr. Chieh-Lin Stanley Wu Invited to the Taiwan Congress of Optometrists

On July 1, 2026, Dr. Chieh-Lin Stanley Wu was invited to participate in the Taiwan Congress of Optometrists, held at the Taichung International Convention and Exhibition Center.

The event was more than an opportunity to share professional knowledge. It brought together optometric education, senior vision care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and international exchange, creating meaningful conversations and new possibilities for future cooperation.

Encouraging Young Optometry Students to Think Globally

At the Asia-Pacific Optometry Summit, Dr. Wu was invited to share an overview of higher optometric education in Australia, including its academic structure, clinical training, and postgraduate study pathways.

Beyond introducing the education system, Dr. Wu encouraged younger optometry students to explore overseas study, international exchange, and postgraduate opportunities.

The value of studying abroad extends far beyond obtaining a degree. It allows students to experience different educational approaches, clinical perspectives, and professional cultures.

For young students, stepping outside a familiar environment can become an important opportunity to broaden their horizons, build confidence, and reconsider what may be possible in their future careers.

Dr. Wu hopes that more optometry students from Taiwan will take part in international learning and eventually bring their knowledge and experience back to contribute to optometric education and clinical practice in Taiwan.

Looking Beyond Clear Vision Toward Better Living

Dr. Wu was also invited to deliver a lecture entitled:

“Visual Function and Quality of Life in Seniors: The Crucial Role of Optometric Care in Supporting Functional Independence”

As people age, the visual system may undergo a range of changes. These changes are not always reflected solely by visual acuity measurements. They may also affect reading, mobility, balance, environmental awareness, participation in daily activities, and confidence in independent living.

Senior vision care should therefore aim not only to help older adults see more clearly, but also to support their ability to read, move safely, participate in society, and maintain the lifestyle that matters to them.

During the lecture, Dr. Wu discussed age-related changes in visual function and the important role of optometric care in supporting independence and quality of life among older adults.

Bringing Vision Care into the Community

Dr. Wu also shared practical experience in collaborating with local government agencies and hospitals to provide community-based vision care for older adults.

Community vision care is not simply about completing a screening. It creates opportunities for older adults to better understand their visual condition and to receive appropriate advice, follow-up, or referral when needed.

In senior care, visual difficulties may interact with mobility, balance, cognition, daily activities, and general health. For this reason, collaboration between optometrists, ophthalmologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, nurses, and community care teams is especially important.

Through interdisciplinary collaboration, vision care can become more closely connected with healthcare, rehabilitation, and community services, helping older adults maintain safer and more independent lives.

Recognition for Service on Taiwan’s Optometry PGY Committee

During the evening banquet, Dr. Wu was honored to receive recognition for his service as a member of Taiwan’s Optometry PGY Committee.

The recognition acknowledged his contribution to clinical education, professional training, and the continued development of optometric practice in Taiwan.

It was not only an honor, but also a reminder of the responsibility to continue supporting clinical education and the development of future optometric professionals.

Strong education, structured clinical training, and the sharing of experience are essential for helping optometrists continue to improve and provide reliable care to the community.

Reconnecting with International Colleagues

One of the most meaningful aspects of a professional congress is the opportunity to connect with colleagues from around the world.

During the event, Dr. Wu was pleased to meet Professor Kyoung Hee Park from Korea again, whom he had previously met at APOC in Jeju in April 2026. He also exchanged views with Dr. Tan Kah Ooi from Singapore, Professor Nilesh Thite from India, and Dr. Peter Chung, President of the Hong Kong Optical Association.

Their discussions covered optometric education, clinical services, professional development, and opportunities for future collaboration.

Although each country and region has its own professional system, culture, and history, there is a shared commitment to advancing optometry, educating future professionals, and improving vision care for the public.

These conversations provided not only valuable knowledge, but also meaningful professional friendships and new opportunities for future international cooperation.

Bringing Professional Exchange Back to Everyday Care

The value of attending professional conferences and international meetings lies not only in sharing knowledge, but also in bringing new perspectives back into clinical practice.

For East Asia Optical Company and East Asia Optometry, continued involvement in professional education, community care, and interdisciplinary collaboration supports a deeper understanding of how people use vision in reading, learning, work, mobility, and daily life.

These experiences reinforce an important principle: quality optometric care is not only about determining the correct prescription. It is also about taking the time to understand how each customer uses vision, what difficulties they are experiencing, and what type of care best fits their everyday needs.

East Asia Optical Company and East Asia Optometry will continue to uphold the principle of “Local Commitment × International Perspective,” translating professional learning and international exchange into more thoughtful, practical, and person-centered vision care for the local community.
